Ethiopian Airlines to Sign Boeing Deal for 10 Freighter Aircraft

Ethiopian Airlines is set to sign an agreement with Boeing on Wednesday for 10 freighter aircraft, according to a banner displayed at the venue of the signing ceremony. The deal follows reports earlier this month that the state-owned Ethiopian carrier was nearing an agreement to purchase up to 10 long-haul Boeing freighters.

The order is expected to include two of Boeing’s current-generation 777F freighters, according to industry sources cited by Reuters. The remaining aircraft are expected to be the newer 777-8F model, which has faced delays. The combination would allow Boeing to supply existing aircraft while bridging the gap until the new freighter enters service.

Ethiopian Airlines is also contributing to the financing of a $12.5 billion airport development project that officials describe as potentially Africa’s largest airport. The first phase of the new airport is expected to open in 2030, further supporting the airline’s long-term expansion plans and its role as a major aviation hub in Africa.
