The European Commission said on Monday that ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox will have to comply with the European Union’s rules for very large online platforms and search engines under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The services each declared that they reach at least 45 million monthly users in the EU, meeting the threshold for the designation.
The platforms will have four months to comply with additional obligations, including assessing and mitigating risks linked to the spread of illegal content. They must also address potential risks to minors and users’ physical and mental wellbeing, as well as threats to fundamental rights, electoral processes and public security.
The Commission will have supervisory and investigative powers to assess how the services operate and whether they comply with the DSA. ChatGPT has been classified as an online search engine under the regulation, while Roblox and Reddit are considered online platforms because they allow users to make third-party content publicly available.
