A tragic helicopter crash in Houston on Sunday evening resulted in the deaths of all four individuals aboard, including a child. The Robinson R44 helicopter was on an air tour flight when it collided with a radio tower at approximately 7:51 p.m., leading to a fire on the ground. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the incident, with officials noting that the wreckage presents a “complex scene.”
The helicopter, which took off from Ellington Airport in Houston, struck a guyed tower, a structure supported by cables. A spokesperson for SBA Communications, the owner of the tower, confirmed that there was a “notice to air missions” (NOTAM) in place to warn pilots about the tower’s presence. Debris from the crash covered around four acres, and although some vehicles on the ground were damaged, there were no reported injuries among the local residents.
Authorities have expressed condolences to the families of the victims and acknowledged the potential for greater tragedy. “This was a horrible tragedy, but obviously it could have been much worse,” said Houston police Lt. Jonathan French, emphasizing the fortunate lack of injuries to those on the ground.
