FBI Labels Michigan Synagogue Attack as Terrorism Linked to Hezbollah Ideology

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has classified a recent attack on the Temple of Israel synagogue in Michigan as an act of terrorism, citing ideological inspiration from Hezbollah. The incident occurred on March 12, when Ayman Ghazali, a 41-year-old Lebanese-born U.S. citizen, rammed his truck into the synagogue before opening fire on security personnel and triggering an explosion using fireworks. Ghazali died during the attack, and authorities confirmed that no other casualties were reported, despite children being present at a preschool inside the premises.

According to Jennifer Runyan, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Detroit field office, Ghazali had been consuming pro-Hezbollah content prior to the attack, though investigators have not established any formal ties between him and the group. Officials also stated there is no evidence of accomplices. U.S. Attorney Jerome Borgen noted that, had Ghazali survived, prosecutors were confident they could have proven he provided material support to Hezbollah, which, along with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, is designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States.

Investigators revealed that Ghazali had displayed increasing signs of radicalization in the days leading up to the attack, including sharing images of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on social media. On the day of the incident, he reportedly informed his sister of his intention to carry out a “mass terrorist attack.” The case comes amid a broader surge in antisemitic incidents across the United States, with FBI data indicating that anti-Jewish acts account for nearly two-thirds of over 5,300 religiously motivated hate crimes reported since February 2024.
