A massive fire broke out on Friday evening at an apartment complex under construction in southeast Denver near the Glendale area, leading to widespread power outages and emergency disruptions across the community, according to Glendale police. Images shared by the Denver Fire Department on X showed towering flames engulfing the building’s wooden frame as thick smoke billowed into the night sky, while fire trucks and flashing lights lined the surrounding streets.
More than 100 firefighters responded to the scene, Denver Fire Division Chief of Operations Robert Murphy told ABC affiliate KMGH-TV. He said the blaze remains active and difficult to contain due to deep-seated hotspots within the structure, adding that crews are expected to remain on-site for an extended period. As a result, Leetsdale Drive has been closed to traffic while emergency operations continue.
One firefighter was injured during the response and was transported to Denver Health hospital, authorities said. A temporary shelter has been established at a nearby event center in Glendale to support affected residents and community members as firefighting and recovery efforts proceed.
