Former Ballerina Ashley Benefield Found Guilty of Manslaughter in Husband’s Death

In a case that has captured national attention, former ballerina Ashley Benefield was found guilty of manslaughter with a firearm in the 2020 shooting death of her husband, Doug Benefield. The Florida jury reached its verdict Tuesday night after deliberating and struggling to get a unanimous decision. The trial dubbed the “Black Swan murder” trial, drew comparisons to the 2010 film “Black Swan” and shed light on the turbulent relationship between the couple.

Ashley Benefield, 24 at the time of the incident, claimed she shot her 54-year-old husband in self-defense during an argument while they were packing for a move to Maryland. Despite allegations of domestic abuse and claims that Doug Benefield had poisoned his first wife and was now poisoning her, no charges were ever filed against him. The defense argued that Ashley Benefield lived in fear for years, while prosecutors contended that the couple’s separate living arrangements disqualified her as a victim of domestic abuse.

During the trial, emotional testimonies from both Ashley Benefield and experts painted a complex picture of their relationship. A marital counselor described Doug Benefield as controlling but committed to making the relationship work, while a former detective testified about the potential danger Ashley faced. Ultimately, the jury sided with the prosecution, finding Ashley Benefield guilty of manslaughter rather than second-degree murder, concluding a high-profile case that revealed deep-seated issues of fear and control within the Benefield household.
