A former Google DeepMind researcher has warned that artificial intelligence could potentially “kill all humans,” saying the world may be running out of time to prevent such an outcome. Bilal Chughtai, who worked as a research engineer on AGI safety and alignment research at Google DeepMind, said he “earnestly” believes AI has the potential to cause catastrophic harm.
Chughtai’s warning comes amid growing concern among AI researchers about the risks posed by increasingly powerful systems. Anthropic scientist Evan Hubinger recently said he believed there was a greater than 10% chance that AI could kill all humans within the next decade, following comments by former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who said some AI developers genuinely believe such an outcome could occur by the end of the decade.
Chughtai said safely navigating the development of AI remains possible but would require greater coordination among technology companies and governments. He called for AI development to proceed at a pace society can manage, allowing emerging risks to be addressed before extreme harm occurs. The warnings come as debate intensifies over AI “doomerism,” with some industry leaders supporting a slowdown in advanced AI development while US President Donald Trump has dismissed calls for regulation as a “hoax.”
