Liam Payne, former member of the globally successful boy band One Direction, tragically passed away at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16, 2024. The incident, confirmed by Alberto Crescenti, the Argentine Director of Emergency Medical Services, occurred at the Casa Sur Hotel, where emergency services arrived minutes after an emergency call about an aggressive man possibly under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Payne was in Buenos Aires to attend a show of his former bandmate, Niall Horan.
Payne, who had struggled with alcohol and health issues, postponed his South American tour in 2023 due to a serious kidney infection. He had recently celebrated being 100 days sober, following a period of personal reflection and recovery. Payne was open about the pressures of fame during his time with One Direction, which sold over 70 million records worldwide, and how he turned to alcohol to cope with the demands of stardom.
The singer was one of five members of One Direction, formed on The X Factor in 2010. He co-wrote over 30 songs for the band, which enjoyed massive success before taking an extended hiatus in 2016. Following his time with the group, Payne pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album “LP1” in 2019 and exploring various genres, including pop, hip-hop, and Latin music.
