Freeport to Begin Environmental Permit Process for $7.5 Billion Chile Copper Expansion

U.S.-based mining giant Freeport-McMoRan is set to initiate the environmental permitting process for its $7.5 billion expansion of the El Abra copper mine in Chile, according to a report by Diario Financiero. The project is being developed as a joint venture with Chile’s state-owned copper major, Codelco, underscoring its strategic importance in boosting copper production in the region.

Freeport had first announced the long-delayed El Abra expansion in mid-2024, outlining plans to begin securing necessary environmental approvals between late 2025 and early 2026. The move signals renewed momentum for the project, which had previously faced postponements amid market uncertainties and regulatory considerations.

The expansion will include the construction of a concentrator and a desalination plant, key infrastructure aimed at supporting sustainable mining operations. Once completed, the upgraded facility is expected to begin operations in the coming decade, strengthening Chile’s position as a leading global copper producer.
