Germany Eyes Brazil for Critical Metals, Offers Tech Support

Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday highlighted Brazil’s strong potential to expand supplies of critical metals essential for e-mobility and wind energy, signaling a push to deepen industrial cooperation. Speaking at the Hanover Industrial Fair alongside Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Merz noted that cost-effective extraction of key minerals presents significant opportunities for both nations.

Merz emphasized that Germany is ready to support Brazil with advanced technology and expertise to strengthen production capabilities and build a more resilient supply chain. The remarks come as Europe seeks to diversify sources of critical raw materials amid growing demand for clean energy technologies and reduced reliance on limited suppliers.

Responding to the proposal, Lula said Brazil has already increased investments in critical minerals and rare earths but made clear that his country would not accept a role limited to raw material extraction for foreign demand. He also revealed ongoing discussions to expand defence cooperation with Germany, including potential collaboration in tanks, air defence systems, and drones, with further bilateral consultations scheduled later in the day.
