Golden Globe Awards 2024 Unveil Surprising Wins and Major Snubs

The 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony concluded with a mix of expected victories and some surprising snubs, leaving audiences buzzing with anticipation for the impending Oscars. In a night filled with notable moments, certain films and performances stood out while others faced unexpected setbacks.

Greta Gerwig’s much-anticipated film, “Barbie,” faced disappointment as it secured only two wins out of nine nominations. Despite Billie Eilish winning Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?” and a nod for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, the film fell short, losing the Best Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy) title to the unexpected victor, “Poor Things.”

Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” caused a stir by clinching Best Screenplay, surpassing strong contenders like “Barbie” and “Past Lives.” The French courtroom drama, which previously earned accolades at Cannes Film Festival and the European Film Awards, unexpectedly emerged victorious, also seizing the Best Picture in the Non-English Language category.

The acting categories witnessed surprising outcomes as well. Elizabeth Debicki outshone Meryl Streep in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in “The Crown,” interrupting what could have been another record-breaking win for Streep. Meanwhile, Lily Gladstone’s powerful performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” secured her the Best Actress title, surpassing anticipated favorites like Sandra Hüller in “Anatomy of a Fall.”

However, the night brought disappointment for some seasoned actors. Bradley Cooper, despite his exceptional dedication to portraying Leonard Bernstein in “Maestro,” left the ceremony empty-handed. Cillian Murphy’s win for “Oppenheimer” dashed Cooper’s hopes, leaving the actor, director, and writer, who spent years preparing for the role, without a coveted Golden Globe win yet again.

The Golden Globe Awards for 2024 showcased both expected triumphs and unexpected upsets, setting the stage for a highly anticipated Oscars ceremony in the weeks to come.
