Alphabet’s Google has announced a groundbreaking partnership with NBCUniversal and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee to infuse artificial intelligence into the U.S. broadcast of the Paris Olympics. As the official search AI partner of Team USA, Google will enable sports commentators to leverage AI to explain competitions, making it the first time a tech company has teamed up with the sport’s nonprofit.
To modernize its coverage and attract younger audiences who prefer online content over live television, NBCUniversal will integrate Google’s AI technology into its broadcasts. This includes personalized AI-generated daily recaps narrated by AI versions of well-known personalities such as sports commentator Al Michaels. Additionally, NBCUniversal’s anchors will use Google Search’s AI overviews during daytime and primetime coverage to provide insights into various sports, such as the significance of pool-lane assignments in swimming competitions.
Comedian Leslie Jones, set to commentate in Paris, will utilize Google’s Gemini AI model to familiarize herself with new sports and engage viewers with her unique style. The collaboration highlights a significant step towards enhancing viewer experience and engagement through advanced AI technology as the Paris Olympics kick off on July 26.
