In recently leaked messages reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Yahya Sinwar, a top Hamas official in Gaza, admitted that he views the deaths of Palestinian civilians as “necessary sacrifices” to continue the organization’s conflict with Israel. Sinwar, who was instrumental in the October 7 attack, expressed indifference to the civilian casualties, describing them as essential to infusing “life into the veins of this nation” and boosting Palestinian resistance.
Sinwar’s messages also revealed his efforts to disrupt ceasefire negotiations, boasting about keeping the Israelis in a vulnerable position. Despite his shock at the brutality of the October 7 attack, which included the kidnapping of women and children, he condemned any attempts by Hamas leaders to seek agreements with Israel, insisting on prolonging the conflict. Sinwar emphasized his commitment to continue fighting until Israel loses international support, even if it means his own death.
These revelations come as Sinwar communicated his disapproval of ceasefire talks led by Hamas’ political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, whose three sons were killed in an Israeli airstrike. Sinwar’s stance underscores his determination to maintain hostilities, regardless of the heavy toll on Palestinian civilians, with an eye toward achieving a strategic advantage over Israel.
