Honeywell Expands ITAR-Free Defense Technology for Europe

Honeywell Aerospace is expanding its portfolio of ITAR-free defense technologies to meet growing demand from European nations seeking to reduce reliance on U.S. export-controlled components. The company is expected to unveil a new ITAR-free product for the international defense market at the Farnborough Airshow later this month. CEO Jim Currier said Honeywell has assigned around 1,000 engineers in Poland and the Czech Republic to develop technologies free from U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), enabling greater flexibility for European and international customers.

The move comes amid a surge in European defense spending, driven by NATO’s push for stronger regional security and the ongoing war in Ukraine. European governments and defense manufacturers are increasingly seeking ITAR-free systems to avoid potential restrictions on the re-export of U.S.-made components embedded in foreign military equipment. Honeywell aims to strengthen its position in Europe by designing products tailored to regional strategic requirements while expanding its global defense footprint.

Honeywell Aerospace, whose defense business contributes about 40% of its overall revenue, has seen international defense sales rise from around 18% in 2020 to nearly 30% last year. The company is also leveraging technology from its 2024 acquisition of Italy-based Civitanavi to develop ITAR-free navigation systems for customers in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Industry experts note that demand for ITAR-free components has grown significantly, with suppliers across North America reporting a sharp increase in requests from European defense manufacturers.
