Indiana Man Confesses to Killing Two Teenage Girls in Prison Call; Evidence and Missing Items Revealed

Richard Matthew Allen, an Indiana man charged with the murder of Abigail Williams, 13, and Liberty German, 14, confessed multiple times to the killings in a phone call to his wife while in prison, according to court documents released on Wednesday. The documents also revealed that investigators believed a “sharp object” was used in the girls’ murders. In the April 3 phone call, Allen allegedly admitted to his wife, Kathy Allen, that he committed the offenses as charged. He reportedly made similar confessions to his mother during another jail phone call. Allen’s defense attorneys have argued that his admissions were a result of his declining mental state and the stressful environment in the correctional facility where he has been housed since November 2022.

Court filings released on Wednesday included information about the evidence and items seized during the investigation. An unspent bullet, believed to have been from Allen’s pistol, was found between the victims’ bodies. Allen’s defense is contesting the evidence related to the bullet. Investigators also seized a number of knives, including double-edged or folding knives, from Allen’s home during an October 2022 search. Additionally, articles of clothing, such as a pair of underwear and a sock, were reported missing from the crime scene. The girls’ injuries were determined to have been caused by a sharp object, as stated in an unsealed document.

Allen’s defense attorneys have filed an emergency motion requesting his relocation from the Westville Correctional Facility, claiming mistreatment and a decline in his mental state. They argue that his “incriminating” statements were a result of the stressful environment at the facility. However, law enforcement officers and the facility’s warden testified that the measures taken were for Allen’s safety, as they believed he could be targeted by other inmates due to the nature of the case involving children. Prosecutors have questioned the potential benefits of relocating Allen, suggesting that the treatment may not significantly differ from his current situation.
