In Canton, Ohio, the death of 53-year-old Frank Tyson, who died in police custody after being handcuffed and held facedown, has sparked an official investigation. The incident, which occurred in a local bar following a nearby car crash involving Tyson, was captured on police body-camera footage that was released this Wednesday. Officers involved have been placed on administrative leave as the footage revealed Tyson expressing distress, stating he couldn’t breathe, while officers restrained him with a knee on his back.
An autopsy has been conducted by the Stark County Coroner’s Office, though results have yet to be disclosed. The footage shows officers checking Tyson’s pulse minutes after he became unresponsive, with emergency medical response initiated shortly thereafter. Tyson was pronounced dead at the hospital less than an hour after the incident.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the probe, with findings to be forwarded to the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office to determine the necessity of charges. This case has drawn parallels to the death of George Floyd, spotlighting ongoing concerns regarding police restraint methods and their potentially lethal consequences.
