Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, has announced his candidacy for Congress, entering the Democratic primary race for Manhattan’s 12th Congressional District. The seat is being vacated by veteran lawmaker Jerry Nadler, who is retiring after more than three decades in the U.S. House of Representatives. Schlossberg, 32, said his campaign is driven by a sense of urgency amid what he called a “constitutional crisis” under Republican President Donald Trump, accusing him of eroding civil rights and consolidating control over all three branches of government.
The Harvard-educated political commentator, who has written for The Washington Post, Politico, and Time, emphasized that his family’s legacy and his New York upbringing inspired him to pursue public service. He pledged to fight for the restoration of healthcare, education, and childcare programs that he said have been undermined in recent years. Schlossberg also stressed the importance of Democrats reclaiming control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections to counter what he described as the dangers of continued Republican dominance.
As the only grandson of the late President Kennedy, Schlossberg has long been viewed as a potential torchbearer for the family’s storied political heritage. His announcement follows his high-profile appearance at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, where he endorsed then–Vice President Kamala Harris. Drawing comparisons to newly elected New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Schlossberg said he aims to connect authentically with voters through social media and grassroots engagement, noting his growing TikTok following of over 830,000.
