Julio Iglesias Denies Abuse Claims After Domestic Workers File Criminal Complaint in Spain

Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has denied allegations of abuse made by two former domestic employees who have filed a criminal complaint against him. In a statement posted on Instagram late Thursday, the 82-year-old artist said the accusations were false and expressed sadness over the claims.

Spain’s High Court prosecutor’s office has confirmed it has opened preliminary proceedings into the complaint, which a rights group said includes allegations of human trafficking for forced labour and servitude, sexual abuse, and violations of workers’ rights. The complaint was filed on January 5 by Women’s Link Worldwide on behalf of the two women, identified using the pseudonyms Rebeca and Laura.

According to reports by Univision and elDiario.es, the women—described as vulnerable Latin American workers—were allegedly employed for 10 months in 2021 at Iglesias’ Caribbean residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. The court has not released details, citing secrecy rules, while Iglesias’ representatives did not respond to Reuters and Sony Music declined to comment.
