The American women’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay team, featuring Katie Ledecky, Claire Weinstein, Paige Madden, and Erin Gemmell, claimed the silver medal on Thursday. Australia’s team set a new Olympic record with a time of 7:38.08 while defending champions China took bronze. Ledecky, swimming the third leg, clocked in at 1:54.93, contributing significantly to the team’s performance at Paris La Défense Arena.
With this silver, Ledecky, 27, became the most decorated female swimmer in Olympic history with 13 medals. The team celebrated their achievement together on the podium, with Gemmell expressing her admiration for Ledecky’s journey. Ledecky, who did not speak to reporters post-ceremony, is set to compete in the 800-meter freestyle heats on Friday, aiming to add to her medal tally.
Ledecky had earlier won the 1,500-meter freestyle in Olympic record time, securing her eighth gold and 12th overall medal. Her impressive haul of medals spans the Olympics in London, Rio, Tokyo, and now France. Despite her record-breaking achievements, Ledecky has expressed her intention to compete in the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
