In a revealing “Face the Nation” interview, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem compared President Joe Biden’s dog, Commander, to her late dog Cricket, whose death she discusses in her forthcoming memoir. Commander, a German shepherd, was relocated from the White House following multiple biting incidents. Noem’s controversial comments suggested that Commander, who has reportedly attacked 24 Secret Service members, should face a fate similar to that of her dog, which she admitted to shooting after it killed a neighbor’s chickens.
During the interview, Noem defended her past decision to euthanize her aggressive dog, stating it was a necessary action to protect her family. She criticized the handling of the Commander’s aggressive behavior, implying that severe measures should be considered. “Joe Biden’s dog has attacked 24 Secret Service people. So how many people are enough people to be attacked and dangerously hurt before you make a decision on a dog and what to do with it?” Noem asked rhetorically.
The discussion took a tense turn when Noem was questioned about alternative actions, such as rehoming the animal instead of lethal measures. She explained that her dog was a working animal with a problematic history, asserting her decision was taken responsibly and with her children’s safety in mind. The Governor’s stark comparison has sparked debate, coinciding with the release of her memoir, which promises more insights into her personal and political life.
