A man was arrested in Minneapolis on Tuesday after spraying U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar with a foul-smelling liquid during a town hall event, according to police and witnesses. The incident occurred as Omar was addressing the audience and criticizing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. A security guard quickly subdued the man and took him to the ground. Police later confirmed he was taken into custody on suspicion of third-degree assault. Omar was not injured and resumed the event after a brief pause.
Witnesses said the liquid, reportedly discharged from a syringe, had a strong odor similar to ammonia and caused minor throat irritation among those nearby. Forensic teams were seen collecting evidence at the scene. Despite being urged by aides to seek medical attention, Omar declined, saying she only needed a napkin, and continued speaking. Her office later released a statement confirming that she was safe. During the confrontation, the man allegedly shouted at Omar to resign before being restrained.
The disruption came amid heightened political tensions, as Omar had been calling for the abolition of ICE and demanding the resignation of DHS Secretary Noem following recent fatal immigration enforcement incidents in Minnesota. Omar, who immigrated to the United States as a child and became a citizen in 2000, has frequently been the target of political attacks. Separately, U.S. Capitol Police reported a sharp rise in threat assessment cases involving members of Congress, noting a nearly 58% increase in 2025 compared with the previous year, reflecting growing concerns over the safety of elected officials.
