Man Charged with Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump Outside Florida Golf Course

Federal prosecutors have charged Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, with the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, who is a major presidential candidate. Routh was found near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on September 15, armed with a gun. The indictment, unsealed Tuesday, accuses Routh of intentionally attempting to kill Trump and includes additional charges of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer.

Routh, a convicted felon, had already been facing charges for possession of a firearm and obliterating its serial number. Investigators found a handwritten note from Routh addressed “To The World,” in which he admitted to attempting an assassination. The case is being overseen by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee who previously dismissed charges against Trump in a classified documents case.

Trump, in a statement, criticized the Justice Department, accusing them of downplaying the assassination plot and calling for Florida officials to intervene. He cited this as the second attempt on his life since July, when Secret Service agents killed a gunman at a rally in Pennsylvania. Attorney General Merrick Garland condemned the violence, vowing to hold Routh accountable.
