David DePape, 44, was sentenced to 30 years in prison by Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley in a federal courtroom in San Francisco for the attempted kidnapping of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and assaulting her husband, Paul Pelosi. The sentencing, delivered on Friday, comes after DePape’s conviction in November 2023 on charges of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on an immediate family member of a federal official. DePape, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, remained silent during the proceedings.
Despite defense arguments for a 14-year sentence citing DePape’s lack of prior criminal history and expressed remorse, the judge emphasized the ongoing threat DePape posed due to his statements about targeting other public figures. The judge also noted the unprecedented risk his actions imposed on public officials’ families. Paul Pelosi continues to suffer from severe injuries, including a skull fracture and nerve damage, from the October 2022 attack, which occurred after DePape broke into the Pelosi residence with intentions to harm Nancy Pelosi.
Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted the severity of the crime, stating that violence against public servants and their families will not be tolerated. The attack, which took place just days before the midterm elections, has had significant repercussions, both legally and politically. DePape faces additional state charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse, with his state trial set to begin soon.
