The annual Met Gala, which took place in New York City, focused on the late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld. The event, which is known for its extravagant outfits and star-studded guest list, celebrated Lagerfeld with a theme that included pearls, starched collars, and black and white.
The fundraiser, which is invitation-only and benefits the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, had about 400 guests in attendance. In addition to Lagerfeld, his cat, Choupette, was also honored, with at least two celebrities dressing up as the feline. Attendees were asked to wear clothes “in honor of Karl” for this year’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Lagerfeld led several of the world’s biggest fashion houses, including Chanel and Fendi, for decades.
Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 85, was often seen sporting dark sunglasses and a ponytail, and was frequently accompanied by his beloved cat Choupette. The co-chairs for this year’s Met Gala were retired tennis star Roger Federer, Grammy-winning artist Dua Lipa, actress Penélope Cruz, writer, actor, and producer Michaela Coel, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
Brittney Griner, a WNBA basketball star who was previously imprisoned in Russia, attended the event with her wife. Two celebrities, Karlie Kloss and Serena Williams, used the occasion to announce their pregnancies. While the Metropolitan Museum’s Great Hall was adorned with 275,000 pink roses at last year’s event, the celebrity outfits are the main attraction.
The public’s attention is largely focused on the Met Gala’s red carpet and the opulent outfits worn by its attendees, which in the past have included Kim Kardashian’s $4.8 million rhinestone-studded dress, once worn by Marilyn Monroe. This year, Kardashian wore a Schiaparelli dress dripping with pearls, inspired by her recent visit to the Karl Lagerfeld office in Paris. Kardashian’s sisters, Kylie and Kendall, also attended the event. Tickets for the Met Gala are available only by invitation, with individual tickets priced at $50,000 and tables starting at $300,000. Kardashian stated in an interview with Vogue on the red carpet that she wanted to feel glamorous and that she chose pearls because they are quintessentially Karl.
Actresses Priyanka Chopra, Elle Fanning, Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz-Beckham, and singer Rita Ora and her husband Taika Waititi were among the attendees at the Met Gala. Rapper Lil Nas X arrived dressed like a mythical creature, covered in pearls and painted silver. Jonathan Majors, who had been invited by Valentino, did not attend the event after “mutually agreeing” with the fashion house not to attend in light of assault charges against him. Choupette, Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, was not present, but pop star Doja Cat and actor Jared Leto both dressed like the feline. Some individuals in the fashion industry criticized the Karl Lagerfeld theme, citing his past controversial remarks about women’s bodies.
