Christy and Paul Akeo, a Michigan couple arrested last month in Cancun, Mexico, over a payments dispute with The Palace Company, have been released and are returning home on a chartered flight. U.S. Special Envoy Adam Boehler, who assisted in securing their freedom, confirmed their departure on Thursday. The couple is being accompanied by Michigan Republican Representative Tom Barrett.
The Akeos had been imprisoned since their March 4 arrest, following accusations by Quintana Roo prosecutors of canceling 13 credit card payments totaling over $116,000 for resort services allegedly not delivered. The couple denied committing fraud, stating their credit card company issued refunds due to the resort’s failure to provide promised amenities, according to CNN.
Their release came after successful negotiations between the parties, facilitated by Boehler after former President Donald Trump raised the issue. As part of the settlement, $116,587.84 will be donated to a nonprofit supporting orphaned children in Mexico. In a joint statement, the Akeos and The Palace Company expressed regret over the incident.
