Authorities in western Montana have successfully captured Chadwick Shane Mobley, a suspect wanted for a slaying in Michigan, who had managed to escape custody over the weekend. The 42-year-old Mobley had removed his handcuffs and shackles while being transported to face charges at a gas station in Plains. The Sanders County Sheriff’s Office announced his recapture on Monday evening, praising the local community for their vigilance and cooperation in helping bring Mobley to justice.
Mobley’s escape had prompted a widespread search in Plains, a small town of approximately 1,000 residents nestled amidst the mountains and portions of the Lolo National Forest. Local authorities had advised residents to secure their vehicles, and homes, and report any suspicious activity. It remained unclear whether Mobley had remained in the area, but law enforcement agencies had been in communication with officials in Michigan throughout the search. The U.S. Marshals Service and the Sanders County Sheriff’s Office collaborated to locate and apprehend Mobley.
Michigan’s attorney general had previously announced that Mobley would face charges, including felony murder, in connection with the 2011 death of Andrea Eilber. DNA evidence found at the crime scene had recently been reanalyzed, linking Mobley to the crime. After being questioned by investigators, Mobley fled from Utah to Montana. He was initially arrested on June 28 in Libby, Montana, but managed to escape custody during his transport to face charges. The swift recapture of Mobley was hailed as a joint effort by law enforcement agencies, ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
