Microsoft Cloud Outage Disrupts Air Travel and Operations in Central US

A significant Microsoft cloud services outage in the Central US region caused widespread disruptions, including the grounding and cancellation of numerous flights. Frontier Airlines, Allegiant, and SunCountry reported severe operational impacts due to the outage, which also led to American Airlines grounding all its flights temporarily. The outage affected Frontier’s operations, resulting in the cancellation of 147 flights and delays for 212 others, while Allegiant faced delays for 45% of its flights, and SunCountry saw a 23% delay rate.

Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, which supports a variety of services for application management and deployment, experienced issues starting around 6 pm ET. The company confirmed that the outage affected multiple Azure services but has since resolved the problem. Frontier Airlines has reported that it is in the process of resuming normal operations, and the ground stop has been lifted. Allegiant and SunCountry have also begun to recover from the disruptions caused by the cloud service issues.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that American Airlines grounded all flights due to a communication problem exacerbated by the Microsoft outage. The nature of the communication issue remains unclear. Microsoft’s swift resolution of the outage is expected to restore normal operations across affected services and airlines.
