Widespread protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations have erupted across the U.S., from the Pacific Northwest to the Gulf Coast, prompting curfews, clashes, and National Guard deployments. In Los Angeles, where tensions have run especially high, President Donald Trump ordered 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines to assist local authorities. However, a federal judge swiftly intervened, issuing a restraining order that returned control of the Guard to California, ruling the deployment unconstitutional and in violation of the Tenth Amendment.
Cities including Spokane, San Antonio, and Tucson reported scattered violence, with arrests, tear gas, and vandalism outside ICE facilities. In Las Vegas, 94 individuals were detained after violent clashes, while Seattle saw a dumpster fire and federal building defacement. Some protests remained peaceful — such as in Chicago, where immigrant rights groups led a lakeside march, and in San Antonio, where Guard units and local police monitored demonstrators.
Saturday’s upcoming “No Kings” rallies, organized by the grassroots 50501 Movement, have gained momentum amid the chaos. Promoted in nearly 2,000 locations nationwide, the campaign calls for the defense of democratic norms and pushes back against what activists label authoritarian moves by the Trump administration. While no demonstration permits have been issued in Washington, D.C., the flagship march in Philadelphia is expected to draw thousands.
