In a surprising turn of events, Republican Representative George Santos from New York is set to make a court appearance this Friday following the emergence of a new superseding indictment. This indictment comes as a result of recent revelations accusing Santos of stealing campaign donors’ identities and racking up thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges on their credit cards. The allegations surfaced after Santos’ former campaign treasurer pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States, acknowledging that Santos’ campaign finance reports were embellished with fake loans and donors.
The latest indictment alleges that Santos repeatedly used campaign donors’ credit cards without authorization for personal and campaign-related expenses. It is claimed that he charged $15,800 to one donor’s credit card for campaign expenses, and subsequently attempted to make $44,800 in unauthorized charges using the same donor’s information. Shockingly, some of the money was allegedly transferred to Santos’ personal bank account, as detailed in the indictment.
Santos, who is currently facing a total of 23 criminal counts, has persistently maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to the initial charges in May. Despite calls for his resignation from Congress, he continues to assert his right to due process. As these charges accumulate, some of Santos’s fellow New York Republicans are now seeking to expel him from Congress, following a previous failed attempt by Democrats. The matter was referred to the House Ethics Committee for investigation earlier, as Republicans argued that the legal process should be allowed to run its course.
