In a heartfelt ceremony, a section of MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland, California, was officially renamed Tupac Shakur Way, paying tribute to the late hip-hop icon, 27 years after his tragic killing. The event took place on Friday, with the presence of Shakur’s family members and notable figures such as MC Hammer, who hailed Shakur as “the greatest rapper ever.” The emotional ceremony saw Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, expressing her hope that Tupac’s spirit would continue to live on in the streets and in the hearts of those who remember his legacy.
Tupac Shakur, born in New York and raised in Baltimore, found a second home in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1980s and lived in Oakland during the early 1990s. The decision to rename the street after him was unanimous, with City Councilwoman Carroll Fife leading the effort, emphasizing that Shakur had a deep connection to Oakland, referring to it as the place where he “claimed his game.” The ceremony coincided with a development in the ongoing investigation into Shakur’s murder, as a former Southern California gang leader pleaded not guilty to his involvement in the fatal Las Vegas shooting. Shakur’s family made passing reference to the ongoing legal proceedings during the event.
