OpenAI Reportedly Holds $5.5 Billion in SB Energy Warrants

OpenAI has been issued warrants estimated to be worth $5.5 billion in power infrastructure firm SB Energy, according to a Wall Street Journal report citing draft IPO documents reviewed by the publication. The reported warrants come as SB Energy prepares for a potential public listing and expands its infrastructure to meet the growing power and data-center demands of artificial intelligence. Reuters said it could not immediately independently verify the report.

The development comes shortly after Nvidia invested $1.5 billion in SB Energy and agreed to provide a guarantee of up to $105 billion to support OpenAI’s lease of a data center in Ohio being developed by the company. SB Energy is also expected to host OpenAI and SoftBank Group as tenants across three planned data centers, highlighting the increasingly close ties between AI companies, chipmakers and power infrastructure providers.

SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, develops large-scale power and data-center infrastructure projects and was founded in 2019. Reuters previously reported that the company could seek a valuation of more than $50 billion in its market debut, potentially as early as next month. The reported OpenAI warrants could further underline the strategic importance of securing long-term infrastructure capacity as AI workloads continue to drive massive demand for computing power and electricity.
