Irish singer-songwriter and actor Glen Hansard, best known for winning the 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song for Falling Slowly from the film Once, has died in a motorcycle accident in Dublin at the age of 56. According to his management company, Hansard passed away early Wednesday following a single-vehicle road accident.
Hansard began his career as a teenage street busker in Dublin before founding the acclaimed Irish rock band The Frames in 1990. His international breakthrough came with the low-budget film Once, in which he starred alongside Marketa Irglova. Their Oscar-winning song Falling Slowly and the film’s success later inspired a Broadway musical that won eight Tony Awards.
Tributes poured in from across Ireland, including Prime Minister Micheal Martin, who praised Hansard as a gifted musician and actor whose work left a lasting mark on Ireland’s cultural heritage. Irish police confirmed that emergency services responded to the crash shortly before 4:30 a.m., but Hansard was pronounced dead at the scene.
