Peru’s Prez steps down

The interim President of the South American country of Peru has stepped down after as many as two people were killed during protests organised against the government.

Manuel Merino, the resigned President, was the speaker of the law-making body of the country.

He replaced President Martin Vizcarra, who was impeached over bribery allegations.

Mr. Merino faced serious criticism for the way he handled protests against the government. He gave free hand to his security force to handle the crisis. His decision led to violent crackdowns.

His resignation was primary demanded for the way he handled the protests organised against the government.

Shortly before the resignation of the president, around twelve ministers of his government filed their resignation in protest against the attitude of the president against protests.

At this moment, it remains unclear who will replace Mr. Merino. The law-making body of the country is expected to come up with a solution to the crisis in the near future itself.
