U.S. President Donald Trump said he urged Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to strengthen efforts to control Ontario’s wildfires, whose smoke has spread across several U.S. states. Speaking after attending the FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, Trump said Canada “has to do better” and even suggested the country could face additional tariffs or be asked to compensate the United States for the impact of the smoke.
The comments came a day after Trump threatened to impose extra tariffs on Canadian goods over the cross-border smoke. Thick haze from hundreds of wildfires in Ontario has blanketed parts of the Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic since last week, prompting health officials to advise residents in affected areas to remain indoors whenever possible.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has highlighted the country’s ongoing wildfire response, noting that more than 5,300 firefighting personnel have been deployed and that advanced thermal imaging and data are being used for real-time fire detection and mitigation. Government data shows nearly 5.9 million acres have burned in Canada this wildfire season, while climate experts warn that rising global temperatures are increasing the frequency and intensity of wildfires worldwide.
