‘Pussy Riot’ members jailed for fifteen days

A Russian court has awarded a punishment of fifteen days imprisonment for the members of the ‘Pussy Riot’ group, which interrupted the 2018 FIFA World Cup football championship finals between France and Croatia in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.

At the time the protest of the group took place, there were several dignitaries including Russian President Vladimir Putin in the pavilion. The daring protest happened in a stadium in front of several foreign guests such as French president and Croatia president badly tainted the image of Mr Putin.

The arrestees have informed the judicial officials that their act were not intended to interrupt the game but to express their disagreement with the FIFA authorities and the autocratic countries with which the top football authority is closely associated.

Many believe that the ‘Pussy Riot’ protest is one of the strongest messages ever delivered to the Russian autocratic regime. For that reason, the members of the ‘Punk Band’ which carried out this daring protest have emerged as a hero in the eyes of those not happy with the autocratic system of Russia.

Veronika Nikulshina, Olga Pakhtusova, Pyotr Verzilov and Olga Kurachyova are the protest group members which have been given a punishment by the court; interestingly, of the four arrestees, at least three are women.

Is this the beginning of a new liberation movement in Russia?
