Ray Stevenson: Thor and Star Wars actor dies aged 58

Actor Ray Stevenson, known for his roles in popular TV shows such as Rome, Vikings, and Dexter, has passed away at the age of 58. His US-based publicist firm, Viewpoint, confirmed his death to the BBC but did not provide further details. Stevenson was reportedly hospitalized during the filming of an action movie, Cassino in Ischia, on the Italian island of Ischia. The cause of his death has not been revealed.

Stevenson, who was born in Northern Ireland in 1964, moved to England with his family at the age of eight. Inspired by a play featuring John Malkovich, he pursued a career in acting and studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He began his acting career with roles in British TV shows such as The Dwelling Place and went on to appear in various series like Waking the Dead, Dalziel and Pascoe, and At Home with the Braithwaites. In 2004, he played a knight in the Hollywood film King Arthur.

Stevenson gained recognition for his roles in US-made TV shows and movies, including the character Volstagg in the Thor trilogy and Titus Pullo in HBO’s Rome. He was set to star as Baylan Skoll in the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Ashoka. Following his death, his co-stars, including James Purefoy, who worked with him on Rome, paid tribute to him on social media, describing him as a brilliant and larger-than-life actor.
