Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran issued an apology on Sunday night after using a homophobic slur directed at a heckler during a game against the Houston Astros at Fenway Park. The incident occurred at the bottom of the sixth inning when a fan repeatedly taunted Duran, leading him to respond with a slur, which was caught on the NESN live telecast. The Red Sox lost the game 10-2.
In his statement, Duran, a 2024 All-Star, expressed deep remorse, acknowledging the impact of his words and apologizing to the LGBTQ community and the entire Red Sox organization. He emphasized the importance of his role as a model for young fans and admitted to falling short of that responsibility during the incident.
The Red Sox organization echoed Duran’s apology, reaffirming their commitment to inclusivity and promising to continue educating their employees and players on the importance of fostering a welcoming environment for all fans at Fenway Park. It remains unclear if Duran will face disciplinary action from Major League Baseball.
