Royal Caribbean to Acquire 50% Stake in Sandals Resorts for $3 Billion

Royal Caribbean Group has agreed to acquire a 50% stake in Caribbean resort operator Sandals Resorts International for $3 billion, expanding its presence in land-based vacation experiences. The deal aligns with the cruise company’s strategy to broaden its holiday offerings through private beach clubs and destination resorts, targeting travellers who prefer land-based stays.

The acquisition, expected to close in early 2027, will add Sandals’ 20 resorts to Royal Caribbean’s portfolio. Founded in 1981 by Gordon “Butch” Stewart, Sandals operates all-inclusive properties under the Sandals and Beaches brands across the Caribbean, including Jamaica, the Bahamas, Saint Lucia, Grenada and Barbados. Royal Caribbean has secured committed debt financing from Morgan Stanley to fund the investment.

A joint venture board led by Royal Caribbean Chairman and CEO Jason Liberty and Sandals Executive Chairman Adam Stewart will oversee the partnership. Stewart will continue as executive chairman of Sandals and Beaches Resorts, guiding their long-term growth strategy. The Financial Times previously reported that the transaction could value Sandals at more than $6 billion.
