Hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs publicly apologized for a 2016 incident in which he appears to attack singer Cassie in a Los Angeles hotel hallway. The apology, made in a video on Instagram, followed the release of security footage by CNN showing Combs allegedly punching, kicking, and dragging Cassie, who was his girlfriend at the time. Combs described his actions as “inexcusable” and expressed deep regret, stating, “I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now.”
The video, which aired on Friday, matches details from a lawsuit filed by Cassie, legally known as Cassandra Ventura, alleging years of abuse by Combs. Combs acknowledged the authenticity of the footage and stated he sought professional help after the incident, including therapy and rehab. He emphasized his commitment to becoming a better person, though he did not ask for forgiveness.
Despite the disturbing nature of the footage, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office indicated the assault could not be prosecuted due to the statute of limitations. Cassie’s attorney criticized Combs’ apology as insincere, noting it came only after the video contradicted his previous denials of abuse. “His repeated denials were proven false,” said attorney Meredith Firetog, underscoring the impact on the victims.
