Suspect Killed After Truck Crashes Into Detroit-Area Synagogue During Preschool Hours

A suspect drove a truck into the hallway of a synagogue in West Bloomfield, near Detroit, on Thursday while children were attending preschool, prompting a confrontation with security personnel that left the suspect dead and no other serious injuries reported. Authorities said the vehicle crashed through the doors of Temple Israel—one of the largest synagogues in the United States—at around 12:30 p.m. local time. Security officers quickly engaged the suspect, opening fire after the vehicle struck one of the guards, who was taken to a hospital with injuries but is expected to recover. Officials confirmed that all 140 children attending the synagogue’s early childhood center were safely evacuated.

Law enforcement officials said it remains unclear whether the suspect was armed with a gun during the incident, although media reports suggested he may have carried a rifle. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said investigators are still determining whether the suspect was killed by security gunfire or died by other means. Authorities also searched the suspect’s vehicle and the synagogue building for possible explosives after reports indicated a large cache of explosives may have been found in the truck.

The attack comes amid heightened security concerns at Jewish and Muslim places of worship in the United States following escalating tensions in the Middle East. According to FBI data, antisemitic incidents have surged in recent years, accounting for nearly two-thirds of more than 5,300 religiously motivated hate crimes reported since February 2024. Officials, including Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, condemned the attack and called for unity against hate, while law enforcement agencies increased security around Jewish facilities in the region as the FBI prepares to take the lead in the investigation.
