Suspected Gas Explosion Causes House Collapse in Syracuse, Injuring 10

A catastrophic house collapse, likely caused by a suspected gas explosion, occurred on Tuesday afternoon at approximately 4:06 p.m. on the 200 block of Carbon Street. The incident has left 10 people severely injured, with eight on advanced life support and two on basic life support, according to Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds. First responders, including around 50 firefighters, undertook a prolonged rescue effort, pulling victims from the wreckage.

Initial reports from CNY Central indicated that between 10 and 20 people might have been inside the house at the time of the collapse. Authorities are continuing to search for additional victims who may still be trapped. Witnesses reported smelling gas just before the explosion, and a strong odor of gas was noted by emergency responders upon arrival. Some victims were found trapped inside a vehicle within the garage of the collapsed structure, which also experienced a fire at its rear.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her support on social media, stating that the state is ready to assist emergency response teams on the ground. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation, with initial theories suggesting a gas explosion or a possible vehicle impact. The incident has led to the closure of Carbon Street between Oberst and John streets as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
