Violent confrontations erupted in several U.S. cities this week amid President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration crackdown. In New York, video showed an immigration officer shoving an Ecuadorian asylum seeker, Monica Moreta-Galarza, to the ground inside a courthouse as she pleaded for her husband. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later confirmed the officer had been relieved of duty pending investigation, calling the conduct “unacceptable.”
In Massachusetts, a Guatemalan woman named Hilda, a legal permanent resident, was hospitalized after ICE agents smashed windows of a pickup truck, pinned her to the ground, and detained a family member. Witnesses said her young son cried as she was taken away by paramedics, fueling outrage among immigrant advocacy groups. DHS and ICE have not yet commented on the incident.
Meanwhile in Chicago, protests outside a detention center escalated into chaos as ICE deployed tear gas, pepper balls, and flash bang grenades against demonstrators. Federal authorities described the crowd as “rioters” attempting to breach facility gates, while clergy and activists said protesters were peaceful before officers opened fire. The unrest follows the fatal shooting of Mexican national Silverio Villegas Gonzalez by an ICE agent earlier this month, further inflaming tensions over immigration enforcement.
