Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar Indicted on Bribery and Money Laundering Charges

Federal authorities have indicted Texas Representative Henry Cuellar and his wife, Imelda, on multiple charges including bribery, money laundering, and acting as agents of foreign principals. The charges, announced by the Justice Department on Friday, allege that the Cuellars accepted approximately $600,000 in bribes from a Mexican bank and an Azerbaijani oil and gas company between 2014 and 2021. The bribes were reportedly exchanged for Cuellar’s influence over U.S. foreign policy and legislative activities beneficial to these entities.

In response to the allegations, Cuellar has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that both he and his wife are innocent and highlighting their long-standing service to the community and his wife’s professional background. Despite the legal challenges, Cuellar remains defiant and has announced his intentions to seek re-election in November, emphasizing his commitment to serving the people of South Texas.

The indictment has stirred reactions within the political community, with some calling for Cuellar’s resignation. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ office has expressed support for Cuellar’s right to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence. The case adds to the growing concerns over integrity in U.S. politics, following other recent high-profile indictments of public officials.
