“A skilled sailor isn’t made by a smooth sea,” and for N M Panicker, this couldn’t be more fitting. Known among expatriate Keralites in the Middle East, Panicker is a trailblazer who turned the tides of marine services in his favor. His journey began humbly in 1978, on the shores of the UAE, with only 800 Dirhams in his pocket. Today, he commands a global marine conglomerate with reach across Dubai, India, China, the Philippines, and Italy. For Panicker, success has been a blend of relentless hard work and a touch of inspiration. From the days of sharing a hot, mud-plastered house with fellow migrant workers, he rose against all odds, using his grit, determination, and keen analytical skills to forge a marine empire. Now, he stands as a master shipbuilder and a celebrated name in the hall of fame of Malayali achievers.
A Challenging Childhood
Growing up as the fourth of seven children in a middle-class family in Chemmakkad, a village in Kerala’s Kollam district, Panicker’s early years were shaped by poverty and adversity. Life in rural Kerala in the 1950s was very difficult as opportunities seemed few and far. Yet, from a young age, Panicker displayed a keen determination to break free from the shackles of deprivation.
“I had nothing except an education that I knew could lead to something more,” Panicker shares. “I always believed that hard work and integrity would one day get me closer to my dreams.” Driven by this aspiration, he completed a diploma in Machine Operations from the Industrial Training Institute and began his career with a National Apprenticeship that took him to the northern parts of India. This journey proved to be the vital building blocks of the foundation for his expertise in machinery and operations, which would later unlock the key to a bright future.
Defining Moments in His Career
In the late 1970s, as Dubai quickly transformed into a bustling trade and industrial hub, Panicker saw a golden opportunity and entered the marine repair and service industry. He worked across various shipyards, where his expertise in machinery operations, combined with his eagerness to learn, helped him stand out and advance.
Over the next two decades, Panicker took on various roles and responsibilities, steadily climbing the corporate ladder. His commitment and work ethic led him to the position of manager, a key milestone in his career. This role allowed him to refine his technical skills, build valuable industry connections, and understand the finer details of the marine sector.
Reflecting on those years, Panicker recalls, “Those were defining years for me. I worked relentlessly, handling challenging projects that fueled my desire to create something of my own. Grandweld taught me the importance of precision and quality—values that would later become central to my own ventures.”
The Birth of Expert United Marine Services LLC
At the turn of the new millennium, Panicker ventured into uncharted waters, founding Expert United Marine Services (EUMS) in Dubai with just one employee. Armed with his expertise and keen industry insights, he initially focused on ship repair services. Over time, EUMS expanded its offerings to include industrial marine engines, generators, and essential equipment for vessels of all sizes. Panicker immersed himself in every aspect of the business, ensuring that EUMS became a name synonymous with quality and reliability in the marine services sector.
“Starting from scratch wasn’t easy,” Panicker reflects. “There were moments of doubt and financial struggles, but I had faith in what I was building. I knew the demand for dependable, high-quality marine services would drive my success.” Today, EUMS stands as a global leader in the marine industry, employing 300 people and serving clients worldwide. Their expertise in ship repair is so highly regarded that ships from across the globe dock at their dry dock in Dubai.
Expanding Horizons: Al Suhail and Beyond
Recognizing the potential for further growth, Panicker expanded his business in 2008 with the launch of Al Suhail Ship Maintenance Services, focusing on marine engine trade and essential equipment. By 2012, he further diversified by establishing Top Star Ship Repairing Services, specializing in dry dock and deck machinery repairs. These ventures solidified his position in Dubai’s marine service sector and paved the way for international growth, including a partnership with Al Suhail Logistics in Morocco.
In 2020, Panicker strengthened his vision by securing a deal with Dubai Maritime City (DMC) for an industrial plot. This move was a clear demonstration of his strategic foresight, setting up a dedicated space in DMC’s industrial hub to innovate and expand his operations.
Commitment to Quality and Family Values
Despite managing a diverse range of companies, Panicker has always viewed his team as a family, fostering an environment of mutual respect and shared values. He believes in rewarding his employees fairly, a principle that stems from his early struggles: “When you lack the resources to complete a task, you hire expertise and pay them their true worth.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Panicker’s commitment to his team was evident as he prioritized their health and safety, implementing strict measures to ensure business continuity and job security during uncertain times.
The Power of Persistence and Faith
Panicker attributes his success to relentless perseverance and unwavering faith in his journey. “I’ve always seen success as a process—constant growth, learning, and contribution,” he explains. His belief in hard work as the key to fortune has allowed him to overcome obstacles and build an empire, with the guiding philosophy that prosperity should never come at the expense of another’s peace.
Accolades and Achievements
Over the years, Panicker has amassed numerous accolades. Recently, he was appointed as the Honorary Trade Commissioner of Brunei to India, and was also recognized as one of the “Most Powerful 100 Malayalees in the GCC,” reflecting his substantial influence in the region. His philanthropic work extends through his leadership at the Gurudeva Charitable Trust in Kerala, focusing on community welfare, and his role as Chairman of Sree Narayana College of Medical Sciences, where he aims to improve healthcare and education in his home state.
Panicker also remains the only Malayali to have a ship named in his honor. An Emirati businessman, impressed by Panicker’s craftsmanship, decided to name a vessel “Panicker” as a tribute to his expertise.
In addition to his entrepreneurial success, Panicker is a trained tabla player and actively nurtures his passion for music and the arts, setting an example of how one can balance professional life and personal passions.
Steering Toward New Shores
Recently, Panicker has taken bold steps to solidify his companies’ reputation for innovation and sustainability. By introducing specialized marine power equipment packages, his companies cater to the evolving needs of their global clientele. Additionally, Panicker has expanded into shipbuilding, inspired by his vision of creating vessels that can withstand any challenge.
The recent WEICHAI UAE dealership agreement marks a significant milestone in his company’s growth, further expanding its product range and service capabilities. Panicker’s unwavering reputation for quality and reliability has earned him the trust of clients around the world.
Legacy and Future Outlook
Reflecting on his extraordinary journey, Panicker remains humble and optimistic. “I’ve been fortunate to witness the growth of something that started with just a vision and hard work,” he shares. His journey from rural Kerala to becoming a key player in the global marine industry is nothing short of remarkable. Panicker, a devoted family man, finds joy and support in his wife, Sujatha, and their three daughters—Liny, Simi, and Nimi. Through his work, he has created hundreds of jobs, contributed to the Middle Eastern marine industry, and inspired countless individuals to pursue their dreams with perseverance and integrity.
