In a devastating incident in south Minneapolis, five young women tragically lost their lives on Friday night when a speeding driver collided with the vehicle they were in. The victims, inseparable friends who were eagerly preparing for a friend’s wedding scheduled for the following day, were described as the shining stars of their community. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara revealed that a state trooper had spotted the speeding driver on an interstate, but the vehicle exited before it could be stopped. Tragically, the driver ran a red light and crashed into the young women’s vehicle at an intersection.
Authorities managed to apprehend the speeding driver, who is suspected of being impaired at the time of the incident. The victims were identified as Sabiriin Ali, Sahra Gesaade, Salma Abdikadir, Sagal Hersi, and Siham Adam. Ali, who was only 17 years old, had recently graduated from Edina High School and had plans to attend the University of Minnesota. Gesaade, 20, was set to begin her junior year at the University of Minnesota Rochester. Abdikadir, 20, was a student at Normandale College, while Adam, 19, attended the University of Minnesota. Hersi, also 19, was enrolled at Minneapolis College. The Dar Al Farooq Islamic Center, where the victims were active members, has initiated a fundraiser to support their grieving families.
The community is reeling from the loss, as the incident marks an unprecedented tragedy with five vibrant young lives extinguished in a single moment. City Councilmember Jamal Osman expressed his frustration and anguish over the fact that the driver attempted to flee the scene before being apprehended. Seeking justice for the young women whose futures were abruptly cut short, Osman emphasized the need to hold the responsible individual accountable. The police investigation into the crash is ongoing, and authorities have yet to release the name of the driver involved.
