Two individuals were killed and five others sustained injuries in a tragic shooting incident that occurred outside a high school graduation ceremony in Richmond, Virginia. The incident took place on Tuesday evening, leaving the local community in shock. The victims were an 18-year-old man, who was set to graduate on that very day, and a 36-year-old man. A 31-year-old victim’s injuries were deemed life-threatening, while the remaining four males, aged 14, 32, 55, and 58, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
A 19-year-old suspect has been taken into custody and is now facing charges of second-degree murder, as confirmed by Richmond Police acting chief Rick Edwards. While the motive behind the shooting remains unknown, authorities believe that the suspect was acquainted with at least one of the victims. Initially, two suspects were reported in custody; however, it was later clarified that only one was believed to be involved. Four handguns were recovered from the scene, but one of them was determined to belong to the uninvolved individual.
The Altria Theater, situated in Monroe Park on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, was the venue for the graduation ceremony, which was abruptly canceled following the sound of gunshots. Off-duty officers present for security responded swiftly and discovered the victims. The suspect was apprehended by university security after fleeing the scene. Thankfully, no law enforcement officers were injured, and no shots were fired by the police during the incident. Richmond Public Schools has announced the rescheduling of the affected graduation ceremonies.
