Trump Accuses Obama of Treason Over Russia Probe, Offers No Evidence

U.S. President Donald Trump has accused former President Barack Obama of committing “treason,” alleging without evidence that Obama led a conspiracy to falsely link Trump to Russian interference during the 2016 presidential election. The claims, made during remarks in the Oval Office, followed comments by intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard, who declassified documents she said revealed a “treasonous conspiracy” by top Obama-era officials. Democrats swiftly rejected the allegations as politically motivated and unfounded, while Obama’s spokesperson called the claims “bizarre” and “a weak attempt at distraction.”

The U.S. intelligence community’s 2017 assessment concluded that Russia attempted to interfere in the 2016 election to damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign and support Trump, but found no evidence that votes were manipulated. A 2020 bipartisan Senate report supported those findings and detailed how Russian operatives worked to influence the election in Trump’s favor. Recent documents released by Gabbard, while critical of some intelligence processes, did not dispute the core conclusions of Russian interference or show direct involvement by Obama.

Trump’s remarks come amid growing pressure from his conservative base, particularly around calls to release files related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Critics say Trump’s renewed attacks on Obama and former officials are efforts to divert attention from other controversies, including his handling of classified documents and the Capitol riot fallout. Democratic lawmakers, including Rep. Jim Himes, dismissed Trump’s claims as lies, citing bipartisan investigations that upheld the legitimacy of the intelligence community’s assessments.
