Trump Presses Iran for Nuclear Deal, Signals Possible Military Action

President Donald Trump urged Iran to reach a diplomatic agreement on its nuclear program during his State of the Union address Tuesday, warning that the United States would not allow Tehran to obtain nuclear weapons. While expressing a preference for diplomacy, Trump emphasized that all options remain on the table, stating that Iran — which he described as the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism — must not be permitted to develop nuclear capabilities.

As indirect talks continue between Washington and Tehran, Trump indicated he could authorize military strikes if Iran refuses to curb its nuclear activities. The U.S. has already deployed a large naval presence to the Middle East, and reports suggest the president has asked advisers for plans that could deliver a decisive blow strong enough to force Iran back to negotiations on U.S. terms. However, military officials have cautioned that such action may not guarantee the desired outcome.

During the address, Trump also referenced last summer’s U.S. strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, claiming they had dismantled key capabilities but warning that Iran is attempting to rebuild. He said the U.S. is seeking a clear commitment from Tehran that it will never pursue nuclear weapons. Iran, however, continues to insist its nuclear program is peaceful and maintains that it has the right to enrich uranium, even as enrichment levels have exceeded those typically required for civilian use.
