Trump Pressures Republicans to Pass Voting Restrictions Ahead of Midterms

U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Republican lawmakers to pass sweeping new voting restrictions, warning he will refuse to sign new legislation until the measures are approved. Speaking to House Republicans at his golf club in Miami on Monday, Trump said the proposed SAVE America Act would help “guarantee” victory in the upcoming November midterm elections. The bill would require proof of citizenship for voter registration, mandatory photo identification to cast ballots, and restrictions on mail-in voting.

The legislation was first introduced two years ago following Trump’s claims that undocumented immigrants were voting in U.S. elections, though election officials and independent studies have found such cases to be extremely rare. While the House passed the SAVE America Act last month, Trump has urged Speaker Mike Johnson to expand the bill to include bans on transgender women in women’s sports and restrictions on gender-affirming surgery for minors, arguing it would help secure broader support in Congress.

Democrats and voting rights advocates have strongly criticized the proposal, warning it could suppress voter participation and undermine confidence in U.S. elections. The bill now faces a challenging path in the Senate, where it would need 60 votes to overcome the filibuster despite Republicans holding only a narrow majority. Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers are also focusing on affordability issues such as healthcare and housing costs ahead of the midterms, as polling suggests voters remain concerned about the rising cost of living.
