Trump Questions Kamala Harris’ Racial Identity in Controversial Remarks

Former President Donald Trump launched a racially insensitive attack against Democratic nominee Kamala Harris during a contentious appearance in Chicago on Wednesday. Speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists’ conference, Trump falsely questioned Harris’ racial background, claiming she “happened to turn Black” a few years ago. He insinuated that Harris, whose mother is from India and father is from Jamaica, had previously only identified with her Indian heritage, leading to a wave of criticism for his divisive comments.

In response, Harris spoke at an event for Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority in Houston, emphasizing that Americans deserve a leader who tells the truth and does not respond with hostility. Harris’ campaign communications director, Michael Tyler, condemned Trump’s remarks, stating that the former president’s hostility and attempts to divide America have been evident throughout his career and political life. The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, also rebuked Trump’s comments, calling them “repulsive” and highlighting the importance of respecting individuals’ self-identification.

Additionally, Trump reiterated controversial views on immigration, suggesting undocumented immigrants are taking jobs from Black Americans, and made contentious remarks about the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey, an unarmed Black woman. These comments further fueled the backlash, with critics accusing Trump of using inflammatory rhetoric to divide the nation.
